Article on Quinta do Vesuvio – World of Fine Wine Magazine

Every year around mid-September in Portugal's remote Upper Douro valley the sound of festive singing can be heard echoing softly over the river Douro late in the evening. It is harvest time at Quinta do Vesuvio and the voice of the ‘capataz’, or foreman, can be heard from within the adega, urging the treaders on as they make the ‘corte’. Repeating an annual ritual that goes back generations, the work of crushing the freshly picked grapes is done not by machines, but by the feet of men and women in low-sided open stone tanks called lagares. The day has been long and the treading team will have spent the day in the vineyards picking the bunches of grapes by hand. It is for this reason that they sing, encouraging each other to continue treading, often late into the night.

Quinta do Vesuvio is the most spectacular Quinta in the Douro valley. Located in the wild and serenely beautiful eastern reaches of the Upper Douro valley, 120 kilometres east of Oporto and 45 kilometres from the Spanish border, Quinta do Vesuvio stands alone both in terms of remoteness and sheer grandeur.

Vesuvio is set in the prime wine growing area of the demarcated Port region, the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, the limits of which were set in 1756. This enormous property commands a spectacular site on the south bank of the river Douro, between the Numão and Lavandeira castles, built to control the ancient river crossing in the 11th and 12th centuries. Its sweeping vistas are renowned and often used to depict the awesome beauty of the Douro.

Vesuvio’s superb terroir is defined by a complex and unique combination of microclimates and soil conditions, ideal for producing the grapes used to make Port and wine. And indeed, the wines from Vesuvio are legendary. In 1876 the Viscount of Villa Maior who visited and commented on all the main properties in the Douro wine-growing region, was to write of Vesuvio and its wines; "All this wine is made scrupulously and to perfection".

Quinta do Vesuvio was built to be the finest Quinta in the Douro valley and to see it today, there is no doubt that it is.
